Three quotes for the same house routinely arrive thousands apart, usually because they are not quoting the same job. This section covers how to force them onto the same terms, what to verify before you sign, and which sales behaviors are worth walking away from.
You are choosing a crew and a warranty as much as a product. The window is made in a factory to a spec you can compare on paper; the installation is done by people in your house, and it is the part most likely to determine whether you are happy in five years.
Make the quotes comparable before you compare them
Quotes that differ wildly are usually describing different work. Before treating a number as high or low, get all of them onto the same terms:
- Insert or full-frame? The single most common reason two quotes are far apart.
- How many openings, and which ones? Confirm the count and the sizes match.
- What glazing package? Specified precisely enough that you could order it twice.
- What is included? Removal and disposal of the old units, interior trim, exterior capping, permits where required.
- What happens if there is rot behind the trim? Ask before the job, not during it.
- Who warrants what, and for how long? The product warranty and the labor warranty are separate things and often come from different parties.
What to verify yourself
Licensing and insurance requirements are set by your state and sometimes your city, and they are verifiable through the issuing body rather than through the company telling you about them. Ask for the license number and check it at the source. Ask for a current certificate of insurance and check the dates on it.
A referral from this site is not a certification. We have not inspected anyone's work, and being listed anywhere - here or elsewhere - is not a substitute for that check.
Sales patterns worth taking seriously
None of these prove bad work, and all of them are common enough to recognize: a price that is only available if you sign today, a discount that appears when you decline, a quote that is not itemized, a very large deposit requested up front, and pressure to skip a written contract. A company confident in its price does not need the appointment to end tonight.
Common questions
Do you rank or rate window companies?
No. We publish no reviews, ratings, star scores or testimonials of our own, because we have not inspected anyone's work. If you ask to be connected, your inquiry goes to independent local companies, and that referral is not an endorsement.
How many quotes should I get?
Enough that you can see a pattern rather than a single number - most people find that is around three. The value is less in the lowest price than in the range, which tells you whether an outlier is a bargain or a different scope.
Will asking for a quote here mean sales calls?
Nothing on this site asks for your phone number in order to read it. You hear from a company only if you ask to be connected to one.
